REFERRAL — The Referral Loop

"Most of my work comes from word of mouth." Cool — what's the plan for when the word stops? Right now referrals happen TO you, not because of you. No ask, no timing, no reward, no tracking. This is the loop that fixes that, step by step.

why this is the cheapest job you'll ever book

The day the job's done — driveway spotless, windows perfect, customer standing there impressed — that moment is worth more than any ad you'll ever run. The best jobs are neighbour jobs: same street, zero ad cost, half-sold before you quote. I won't fake a stat here — that's the honest pattern from inside real home-service companies, mine included. A referral system just stops leaving those jobs to luck.

the loop — 4 pieces

1. the trigger

Job done + paid + happy? The ask fires. Automatically — not "when you remember." The moment they pay is the moment they like you most. Three weeks later the shine is gone. If you're running it by hand: the ask goes out the same evening the invoice clears, every job, no exceptions.

2. the ask (word for word)

Hey [first name], glad the [service] came out great. Quick one — know a neighbour or two who'd want theirs done? If someone books through you, you both get [$25] off your next job. Here's my link/number to pass along — takes you 10 seconds.

Stupid-easy, one tap to share, and it names the reward up front. Never "if you know anyone, feel free to refer us" — that's not an ask, that's a shrug.

3. the reward

Make it worth their 30 seconds: a discount on their next service, a gift card, cash. Pick ONE and print it everywhere. A warm neighbour job for [$25–50] of reward is the cheapest customer acquisition in home service — you'd pay multiples of that for a cold lead that might ghost.

4. attribution — know exactly who sent who

Two habits: every new lead gets asked "who sent you?" and the answer gets written down; every referrer gets a thank-you + their reward the same week. Reward that lands late (or never) kills the loop dead. Reward that lands fast turns one happy customer into a scout who does it again.

run it this week

  • Pull your last 10 happy customers — send each the ask above tonight (it works late, too: "we did your windows in May…").
  • Add the "who sent you?" question to how you take every new lead.
  • Pick your reward, put it in the ask, honor it fast.

The honest catch: the loop only compounds if the trigger fires on EVERY job — and by hand, it dies the first busy week (same disease as follow-up). The done-for-you version wires the ask into the same rails that fire your review ask and your follow-up: job marked paid → ask goes out → referral tracked → reward flagged.
